My name is Frank Knoop.
I, along with my wife, started Your Personal Firefighter after a kitchen fire occurred in my home at 2:30 in the morning.
While my family was sleeping, I made a snack using our toaster. I inserted my item into the toaster and turned around to our sink for about 45 seconds before I realized something was wrong.
Flames shot out of our toaster oven and caught the lower portion of our cabinets on fire.
Being a firefighter, I immediately knew what to do, but at that moment, I realized my daughters, sons and wife would have panicked.
My family would have ran to get me to extinguish the fire rather than extinguishing it themselves.
Had I not responded quickly, our whole kitchen would have been engulfed in flames, along with one of my children’s bedrooms that was situated above.
This moment changed my perspective on fire safety in my home forever.
I soon realized that I had never taken the time to teach my family how to properly extinguish a fire, or what to do in case of an emergency, because I assumed that I would always be there when they needed me.
That night, my extinguisher still had the tags on it and a zip tie that needed to be cut off, two crucial steps that could have been avoided had our fire extinguisher been ready for use.

I am personally a retired firefighter with 27 years of experience. I retired from the City of Grapevine in 2015.
